Welcome MyBarackObamaPaperDoll.com Visitors!

Ever since I was a kid I have been enthralled by politics, drawing and playing basketball. The founding of MyBarackObamaPaperDoll.com allows me to indulge in two of these obsessions in an obvious way. And the fact that our 44th president-to-be is also a basketball player is icing on the cake! A perfect storm of my personal favorite things.

My reason for wanting to create paper dolls of president-elect Barack Obama is simple. His candidacy motivated hundreds of thousands of new voters to take an interest in the American democratic process and that was awe inspiring to see. And one of those people was my sister Beth Anderson, now my partner in this venture as well as my niece Jennifer Fix, our MySpace and Facebook expert.

So now that the election is over and the future Obama administration is starting to take shape, I wanted to do my part to help move people from being engaged in the election of Senator Barack Obama to being engaged in the governing process of President Barack Obama. I plan on doing that using my cartoons and introducing the beauty of political wonkery with website suggestions that will help readers educate themselves about the government and the messy, wonderfulness that is our democracy. The title of One Minute Wonk indicates that my posts will not be long, but they will be “filling.”

First suggestion: The Library of Congress’ very complete website. Check out this beta feature that allows you to look up the sponsor of bills before congress. This is a great place to see what your congressperson has been up on your behalf. So don’t wait for the campaign ads to appear during the next election cycle - keep track of them now and you’ll be able to tell fact from fiction when those ads appear on your television.
