Saturday Obama News Wrap Up…

From CNN:

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell is lending his stature to an initiative from the incoming administration to connect volunteers with causes that need them.

“Let’s come forward to serve our fellow citizens and to serve our nation,” Colin Powell said Friday.

“We have an economic problem,” Powell told a Washington news conference Friday. “People are losing their jobs. Let’s come forward to serve our fellow citizens and to serve our nation.”
From the New York Times:

THE basketball hoop is coming out of hibernation.

At several junctures during his presidential race, Barack Obama spoke wistfully about the prospect of playing basketball on the White House grounds, where there is a seldom-used backboard on the southwest lawn. In nine days, he will have his chance when he becomes the first president who is just as likely to suit up and head for the court — not the bleachers — when the dribbling starts.
Chris Hayes, Washington editor of The Nation, appeared on Countdown with Keith Olbermann this week to discuss the recent appointment of Dr. Sanjay Gupta to the role of Surgeon General. Hayes explained why the appointment has stoked such reticence, and how the nomination, though largely symbolic, may face opposition in Congress. From veteran universal healthcare champion Rep. John Conyers to Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Krugman, many have balked at the nomination of Gupta over a few issues, principal of which is his anemic stance on universal healthcare.
