The World Awaits America’s New President

From the Toronto Globe and Mail:

This is an age of skepticism, an era of cynicism. The economy is in terrible, and terrifying, shape. The Middle East, always on the verge of explosion, is living with a lit fuse. Almost nobody in North America feels that things are on the right track. Many of the brand names of our culture are tarnished or have suffered huge losses: Bear Stearns, Citibank, Ford, the Broadway musical, the Republican Party.

But one brand name retains its shine, and so far has defied skepticism and battled cynicism: Barack Obama.

From the Irish Times:

The excitement is building ahead of Barack Obama’s inauguration on Tuesday, which promises to be one of the biggest parties the US will ever throw.

From the Times of London:

Obama will be sworn in as president with his full Muslim-sounding name of Barack Hussein Obama, in keeping with White House tradition.

“This Tuesday, we can reaffirm our own veneration and love for our country and our democracy,” he said yesterday in a radio address. “We can once again provide an example to the world.”
